ishpiming (ojibwemowin): in the sky

the moment we are born, we are imprinted with a map of the sky.

the archetypal dynamics underlying that moment, represented in the positions of the sun, moon, and planets, are carried with us for the rest of our lives.

in that moment we take our first breath, the track of our life takes form, and we are set along a fated and holy path.

the birth chart represents a natal promise, a responsibility and a calling for fulfillment.

hi, i’m alex.

i came to astrology after a series of destabilizing and transformative events in my personal life.

maybe you did, too?

or maybe you are, now?

learning how to read the birth chart that was given to me in my first moment in this world has brought me deeper in tune with my design, path, and place in the world.

i did this myself, which took years. you can bypass these years of study by working directly with a professional astrologer.

education & influences

  • i am grateful to my ojibwe cultural teachers, the knowledge bearers who made it possible for my family to return to our traditions.

i am grateful for and profoundly influenced by the work of leanne betasamosake simpson, basil johnston, eddie benton-banai-ba, anton treuer, louise erdrich, and william warren-ba.

i am grateful for wendy makoons geniusz, for both her published work on anishinaabeg ethnobotany and more personally for her ojibwe language zoom classes.

finally, i am grateful to salish people, of the coast and interior, who have welcomed me into their communities as a guest and taught me how to behave.

  • there aren’t exactly degrees in what i do, you just have to cobble it together from what’s available.

i have a master’s degree in history. i taught american indian studies as an adjunct prof for 3 years, have taught high school history & english for 4.

my academic work is less about writing papers and more about teaching people.

the pluto in aquarius re-writing the future has hit the educational system full force, and i’m glad to be a part of that.

  • the astrology podcast was my first introduction to the world of astrology, followed by chris brennan’s hellenistic class (which i still haven’t finished tbh).

i pursued the first two years of tony howard’s program through astrology university. through that program, i was able to learn with demetra george, kelly surtees, mark jones, lynn bell, jason holley, and many others. i am grateful to those instructors and to tony and michael for holding that space at au.

i am grateful to be influenced and guided by dr. jenn zahrt, and to be in community with so many astrologers and magicians in the pacific northwest.

  • i am inspired and enlivened by the brilliance, humility, and compassion of pallas k. augustine and rain mason. i hope to live up to their example of stewardship, guest-host relations, and reciprocal relationships of care.
